Congressman Bob Gibbs Votes in Support
of Measure to Prevent Default
July 29, 2011
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement after the passage of The Budget Control Act of 2011, which cuts $917 billion in spending over 10 years while ensuring that the United States has the necessary funds to pay its bills:
When you open it look at table 9, page 34 under (Receipts, Total). It shows that the amount of money that came into the federal government during the month (people are still working and paying taxes) was approximately $250 Billion. It also shows that the amount of interest to be paid on our national debt was approximately 24 billion ( table 9, page 34 under (Net Outlays, Net Intrest)). That is all that has to be paid to prevent the federal government from going into default. No need to shut down the government.
The simplest way to view the debt ceiling debate in Washington is as a struggle over the kind of government we want. If you want a government that runs everything from the student loan business to car companies, then taxes will have to go up. If you think government is too big already and should start to pull back, then Washington has to change its ways — fast.
This is the message I have brought to the White Housefor more than two years in an effort to persuade President Obama to rein in a government that has lost all sense of limits. This is also why, when those discussions failed to bear fruit, I had hoped an approaching limit to the president’s borrowing power would cause him to think again.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The historic $38 billion in budget cuts resulting from at-times hostile bargaining between Congress and the Obama White House were accomplished in large part by pruning money left over from previous years, using accounting sleight of hand and going after programs President Barack Obama had targeted anyway.
Such moves permitted Obama to save favorite programs – Pell grants for poor college students, health research and “Race to the Top” aid for public schools, among others – from Republican knives, according to new details of the legislation released Tuesday morning.
And big holes in foreign aid and Environmental Protection Agency accounts were patched in large part. Republicans also gave up politically treacherous cuts to the Agriculture Department’s food inspection program. Continue reading Budget tricks helped Obama save programs from cuts
Members of the Ohio House Republican Caucus today held a press conference to discuss revised motor carrier safety regulations that are enforced by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), as well as legislation to alleviate the financial strain that these regulations have caused small businesses.
At the press conference, Assistant House Majority Whip Cheryl Grossman (R-Grove City) and State Representative Terry Boose (R-Norwalk) announced jointly sponsored legislation that would address the newly implemented PUCO rules that, when enforced, will impose additional strains on Ohio’s small businesses.
“As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to the people of Ohio to ensure that the government is not hindering job creation or economic development,” said Grossman. “I’ve had numerous conversations with business owners within the 23rd District who say that the new regulations are hindering their businesses’ expansion and success. This is an issue that must be addressed immediately.”

In a second follow-up to how the interactions between the pro-SB 5 groups and anti-Senate Bill 5 groups. This first hand report was also brought forth by Tom Zawistowski of the Portage County Tea Party. His account is as follows:
Canton, OH – Tuesday, February 22, 2011
After the experience in Columbus, we were looking for ways to be more effective. We then heard that the unions had decided to implement another Alinsky tactic and start protesting Governor Kasich everywhere he went in an effort to scare people away from meeting with him. As Glenn Beck says, “Isolate them, then destroy them.” So, the Governor was going to speak to the Chamber of Commerce in Canton. We decided we could be more effective at these local meetings as opposed to going to Columbus again. Stark 9.12 led the effort, supported by the Portage County TEA Party and the Summit 9.12 groups. When we arrived on the scene, at 4:30 PM on a Tuesday, it was clear the union people had been in position for a long time.
Having been to Columbus, I immediately went straight up to the ranking Swat officer and introduced myself as one of the leaders of the group. I had my Portage County name tag with my title clearly displayed and I was wearing a Portage County TEA Party hat. I said to him, “Our goal is to make sure that there are no incidents at this event today and that everyone gets out of here safely. Continue reading Ohio Senate Bill 5 Additional Stories – Continued
