Representative Bob Gibbs Sworn into 112th Congress

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Bob Gibbs was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives today by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).  He will represent Ohio’s 18th Congressional District in the 112th Congress.

“It is an honor and a privilege to represent the people of Ohio’s 18th District,” said Gibbs.  “I am ready to go to Washington and work to restore people’s trust and faith in Congress.”

“I am proud to be a part of this historic new Congress as we begin to address the needs of the people,” said Gibbs.  “For me, the 112th Congress is about putting people back to work.  In order to do that, we need to stop the reckless spending habits of Washington and allow the private sector to continue creating jobs and invest in our workforce.”

“I will remember the message the American people sent Washington in November and work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to control the federal budget and reduce deficit spending,” said Gibbs.  “I will also fight to provide tax relief to the middle class and reform unnecessary and burdensome small business regulations.”

Congressman Gibbs will serve on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Agriculture Committee.

The Congressman’s D.C. office address is:

329 Cannon House Office Building

Representative-elect Bill Johnson Declines Congressional Health Care Benefits

Poland, OH — Representative-elect Bill Johnson has announced his decision to turn down Congressional health care benefits as he enters the House of Representatives.

The decision, Johnson says, is based on his belief that members of Congress shouldn’t have access to premium health care benefits when millions of Americans are struggling just to make ends meet.

“Lincoln famously put forth the notion that government should be of the people, by the people and for the people,” Johnson said.  “This is one substantial way I can show that my commitment to the people of Eastern and Southern Ohio is to help them, not to gain exclusive benefits for myself.”

Johnson said Congress must focus on repealing Obama Health Care and instead adopt patient-based, market-driven health care solutions. Continue reading Representative-elect Bill Johnson Declines Congressional Health Care Benefits

Portage County Raises Concerns about Voting Machine Problems

Kent, Ohio -  The Portage County TEA Party today released a letter it has sent to the Portage County Board of Elections which documents specific voting machine problems observed by its members in Portage County on election day, November 2, 2010.  The group recruited regular citizens to volunteer to be poll watchers this year and observe the election process, in an effort to assure Portage County voters that their votes are counted accurately and that the process was secure.

Portage County TEA Party Executive Director, Tom Zawistowski, said “After observing this election in an up close and personal manner, our members have a tremendous respect for the challenges that the workers at the Board of Elections, and at the actual polls themselves, face before, during and after election day.  Running an election is no easy task. Though the vast majority of votes take place without incident, we were surprised by the number of problems with voting machines documented by our members, which is why we wrote this letter.” Continue reading Portage County Raises Concerns about Voting Machine Problems

18th District Voters Guide Released for Congressional Candidates

The Abigail Adams project released their results for Ohio’s 18th District voters guide that puts incumbent Zach Space (D), Bob Gibbs (R) and Lindsey Sutton (I).

The Abigail Adams Project is a voter information initiative that provides candidate information without including party affiliation. The project outlines who the candidates are and where they stand on the issues from the President of the United States all the way down to school boards in every city, county and state in the country. Information is open to all candidates and not just those running with one of the two common parties.

For the 18th District, incumbent Zach Space refused to answer any of the questions submitted by the Project to help voters understand where the candidates stand on a variety of issues.

You can view the voter guide for the 18th District by downloading it here.  Find out more about the Abigail Adams Project by visiting their website at http://www.abigailadamsproject.org.

TEA PARTY TO PROVIDE POLL WATCHERS AT PORTAGE COUNTY PRECINCTS

Kent, Ohio -  The Portage County TEA Party, in conjunction with the Portage County Republican Party, today announced that its members will be working on Election Day, November 2, 2010, as “Poll Observers” at various precinct polling locations throughout Portage County.  In making the announcement, Portage County TEA Party Executive Director Tom Zawistowski said, “We have been concerned about the growing perception in our county, our state and our country, that there is wide-spread voter fraud in our elections.  When we held our eighteen township outreach meetings this year we would ask citizens if they were concerned about their vote not being counted or about voter fraud.  Every time 75% of the people would raise their hand. That is unacceptable, and quite frankly that perception is inaccurate.  Yes, the national media has exposed some sensational examples of voter fraud, but we do not believe that type of activity is happening in Portage County.”

Zawistowski went on to say, ”Unfortunately perception is reality, so our job is to give voters an accurate perception of the voting process. Therefore, with the cooperation of the Portage County Republican Party and the Portage County Board of Elections, we are going to train common citizens to be what are called ‘Poll Observers’ to observe the vote on November 2nd. They will have the ability to report any voting irregularities that they observe.  We are confident that those citizens will see with their own eyes that the vote in Portage County is conducted in a fair and totally professional manner, and they will then be able to assure their fellow citizens that only valid votes are counted.”

Andy Manning, Chairman of the Portage County Republican Party and Vice-Chairman of the Portage County Board of Elections, said, “When the TEA Party first approached us about this idea, we were concerned that so many of our citizens believed that voter fraud was a serious problem – particularly here in Portage County.  We are confident that giving citizens an opportunity to see first hand what happens behind the scenes on election day will prove that the Board of Elections does a great job.  By law, ‘Poll Observers’ must be appointed by one of the two political parties, so we are going to appoint TEA Party members who are registered as Republicans to those positions. We can only appoint people who are registered with our party. The Democratic party can do the same and we invite them to do so. We agree with the TEA Party that the only way to dispel these unfounded concerns is by making the voting process transparent so that Portage County citizens can have confidence in the voting process.”

The TEA Party is not a political party but a political movement.  It is loosely based on the Boston Tea Party of 1773 in which American Colonists rebelled against the “Taxation Without Representation” of the King of England and the English Parliament by dumping tea into Boston Harbor.  The initials TEA are today used to show that many current American citizens feel that they are “Taxed Enough Already” by the U.S. Government as well as state and local governments. The movement is committed to improving citizen education about the election and governing processes.  The Portage County TEA Party currently has over 1,800 members who are dedicated to recruiting, training, electing and supporting citizen representatives in all government offices.

Q&A Session With Huron County Commisioner Candidates

By: Michael E. Neal Recently I was given a opportunity to speak with the three candidates running for Huron County Commissioner. You can’t drive anywhere in Huron County without seeing their signs which is an indication of their enthusiasm towards this race. This political battle is between Democrat Incumbent Mike Adelman, Republican Joe Hintz and Independent Jim Ewell. Mike Adelman from Monroeville has held the seat for the past 10 years. Joe Hintz and Jim Ewell both reside in Norwalk.

Q&A Session with Huron County Auditor Candidates

One of the more interesting races for Huron County is the race for county auditor. This race is between two highly qualified individuals, incumbant Democrat Roland Tkach and Republican Bob Patusky. I recently sat down with the candidates for a question and answer session.

TEA PARTY ANSWERS CHARGES BY DEMOCRATIC CHAIRMAN CRAIG STEPHENS

Kent, Ohio – Today, Portage County TEA Party Executive Director, Tom Zawistowski, responded to accusations made by Portage Democratic Chairman, Craig Stephens, about the TEA Party Movement on Thursday at a Democratic fund raiser held at the Italian-American Club in Ravenna.  At that event, Stephens was quoted as saying,  “We need strong leadership there (county commissioner), we don’t need tea-baggers that are running around saying that the Sheriff’s Office spends too much money, let’s cut tax, let’s get rid of deputies, let’s get rid of school teachers, let’s get rid of fireman, let’s get rid of police officers… That’s bull.”

In responding to Stephens comments, Zawistowski said “The only BS in Portage County is coming out of Craig Stephens mouth.  Mr. Stephens obviously has not attended any of the 18 Township outreach meetings we have held in the past 6 months, where we say over and over that it is an outrage that Democratic mayors, like Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, were cutting police and fire department staff instead of cutting administrative and unconstitutional social programs. Look around Craig, you don’t see any conservatives cutting police – they are all Democrats.  Stephens charges are similar to President Obama saying the Republicans are stopping his agenda when he controls all three branches of government.  Nobody’s buying that bull either.”

Zawistowski went on to say, “ We challenge Mr. Stephens to find any quote from anyone in the Portage Count TEA Party every saying anything about cutting any police, sheriff deputies or fireman. Its a flat out lie. It is clear that Mr. Stephens and the other “good old-boys” in Ravenna still have no respect for the public they are supposed to serve, when he intentionally uses the derogatory name of “tea-baggers” to describe the fastest growing citizen group in the county that now has over 1,600 active members. Stephens can make all the false accusations he wants, the fact is that Democratic “leadership” has put our county our state and our country in financial ruin and in November we will look forward to rectifying that situation.”

The movement is attempting to motivate common American citizens to take a more active role in selecting and electing representatives that are committed to representing the people who elected them, instead of their own political parties and other special interest groups.

New London, OH Grange hosted Candidates’ Night

Huron County OhioBy Michael E. Neal

The 2010 election year was in full swing Wednesday night when the New London Grange hosted Candidates’ Night. Many local and state candidates showed up to speak in order to appeal to voters.

Those eyeing the Huron County Commissioner seat, Republican Joe Hintz, Independent Jim Ewell and Democrat incumbent Mike Adelman were present. The current Commissioner Mike Adelman has held the position for the last ten years.

The two vying for the Huron County Auditor seat Democrat Incumbent Roland Tkach and Rob Patusky were present.  Republican State Senate candidate Gayle Manning was also in attendance. Mrs. Manning is running against State Senator Sue Morano for the right to represent the 13th district which includes Huron, Lorain and Erie counties.

The highlight of the night was the candidates for State Representative for the 58th district. This district includes all of Huron county and portions of Lorain and Seneca counties. Those battling for this office are: Republican incumbent Terry Boose from Norwalk, Democrat Greg Davidson from Willard and Libertarian candidate Bob Williams “Bushel Bob” from Oberlin.

The first candidate to take the podium was Bob Williams. Mr.Williams said that Huron County is jockeying with two other counties to have to highest unemployment rate. He also expressed the need for smaller government. He then took a moment to speak about the ODNR and how they were eying the Vermilion River to add to its Scenic Rivers Program. He said the people didn’t want this and we got it stopped. Mr. Williams is the administrator for the Vermilion River Property Rights Association.

Next up was Greg Davidson. Mr. Davidson spoke of the need for unity in our government. He said in order to create jobs, we need to cut the red tape that has plagued this district for years.. He spoke of his Military service and his service to his community. He added that if elected he would be more accessible to the people

Incumbent Terry Boose was the last to speak. He expressed the need for jobs in this area. He also explained how difficult it is in Columbus to get help for rural areas. He then reiterated his stance on not spending taxpayer money for unnecessary programs. He closed by thanking his opponents and sympathized with them on the sacrifices made in order to run a campaign.
