Ohio’s Strickland Struckdown as Republicans Ride Voter Anger

Ohio Voting

It was an eye opener last night in Ohio, a late Halloween horror flick for many democrats in Ohio. Angry voters had decided they’ve had enough – enough lost jobs, enough money taken out of their pockets as they decidedly defeated many incumbents in Ohio’s races.

Governor’s Race: Republican challenger John Kasich beat incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland.

Senate Race: Republican Rob Portman beat Democrat Lee Fisher 57% to 39%

In a massive upset, Ohio’s 18th district Republican Bob Gibbs unseated unseated incumbent Democrat Zack Space 54% to 40%.

Ohio’s 2nd District: Republican Jean Schmidt 59% to Democrat Surya Yalamanchili 35%.

Ohio’s 4th District: Republican Jim Jordan 72% / Democrat Doug Litt 25%

Ohio 5th District: Republican Bob Latta walked all over Democrat Caleb Finkenbiner 68% to 26%.

Ohio’s 6th District: Republican Bill Johnson beat Democrat Charlie Wilson 50% to 45%.

Ohio’s 7th District: (R) Steve Austria 63% / (D) Bill Conner 32%

Ohio’s 8th District: Republican John Boehner easily held onto his seat against Democrat Justin Coussoule 66% to 30%.

Ohio’s 9th District: Democrat Marcy Kaptur 59% / Republican Rich Lott 41%

Ohio’s 10th District: (D) Dennis Kucinich 53% / (R) Peter Corrigan 44%

Ohio’s 12th District: Republican Pat Tiberi 56% / Paula Brooks (Democrat) 40%

Ohio’s 14th District: Republican Steve LaTourette 65% / Bill O’Neil Democrat 31%

Ohio’s 15th District: Republican Steve Stivers 55% / Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy 41%

Ohio Free Press Interview with Matt Miller - Running for OH-16 Congressional Seat

There were a lot of interesting people at the Tea Party Express III rally this past weekend at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. Ohio Free Press’ Vic Roth was able to meet up with Matt Miller who is running for the OH-16 District Congressional seat. Here’s what Matt had to say.

Ohio Free Press Interview with Paul Schiffer - OH-16 Congressional Candidate

This past weekend our own Vic Roth was able to catch up with Paul Schiffer who is running for the OH-16 District Congressional seat. He was at the Tea Party Express III Rally in Berea and here’s what Paul had to say:

Candidates for 16th District seat busy with campaigns

JACKSON TWP. —
Paul R. Schiffer believes a volunteer has tried to sabotage his effort to win the Republican nomination for Ohio’s 16th congressional district.

“He’s basically paralyzed the campaign,” Schiffer said of the volunteer.

Schiffer is one of four Republicans on the May 4 primary ballot seeking nomination for the 16th District seat. The winner will challenge U.S. Rep. John Boccieri, D-Alliance, in November.

Because of problems with the volunteer, Schiffer has been tied up filing reports with the Federal Elections Commission, the FBI, Jackson Township police and Massillon city prosecutors.

Police and prosecutors said they believe the situation is a civil dispute and don’t expect any criminal charges will be filed.

Schiffer said he fired the volunteer March 11. Two days later, he filed a complaint with Jackson police, saying the man hadn’t given back property when he was dismissed. Schiffer told police the volunteer was fired because of his conduct with other campaign workers and disruptions at the campaign headquarters on Everhard Road NW.

The volunteer joined the campaign in December. Schiffer claims the volunteer designed a new “bogus” Web site and blocked access to earlier sites. The volunteer is accused of accessing the campaign’s e-mail and sending unauthorized messages.

“He’s tried to take over the whole campaign,” Schiffer said.

The volunteer, meanwhile, has left Ohio. He said that he used his own money to create the Web site promoting Schiffer’s campaign, which includes the e-mail service. He also said the changes he made were approved by the campaign.

The dispute, Schiffer said, forced him to cancel his first town hall meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday and changed to tonight.

The first town hall now is set for Wednesday in Wadsworth, while the second will be March 26 at Hoover High School in North Canton. Schiffer plans town hall meetings on each Wednesday in the weeks approaching the primary.

MILLER EVENT SET

A fundraiser supporting Matt Miller’s bid for Congress has been set for Monday night in Green.

The free event begins at 7 p.m. at the 356th Fighter Group restaurant at 4919 Mount Pleasant St. NW. Local recording artist Julie Hufstetler will perform a mix of patriotic and contemporary music. Raffle tickets will be sold to win door prizes. Campaign contributions will be accepted.

A $50 donation is necessary to attend a private reception at 6:30 p.m. with Miller. Anyone wishing to attend can contact Greg Butler at (330) 832-5205.

Miller, a former Ashland County commissioner, is making his third bid for the nomination. He lost to Ralph Regula in the 2006 Republican primary and narrowly lost to Kirk Schuring in the 2008 primary.

The losses haven’t dampened Miller’s enthusiasm. He made campaign stops Monday in Wooster and Canton, before ending the evening passing out literature after a North Canton City Council meeting.

MORE RENACCI SUPPORT

Jim Renacci, the former Wadsworth mayor in the Republican primary race for the 16th District, has picked up more endorsements.

Renacci — who has caught the national party’s attention — is one of only 10 candidates nationwide to receive the House Conservative Fund’s endorsement.

Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., the House Conservative Fund’s honorary chairman, said the organization exclusively supports principled Republicans who “won’t vote for tax increases, who are pro-growth and who are pro-family.”

The Medina County Republican Party’s executive committee officially endorsed Renacci. Wadsworth is in southern Medina County.

Party Chairman Bill Heck called Renacci the strongest among Republican candidates seeking the seat.

BOCCIERI ENDORSED

An environmentalist group — the League of Conservation Voters — has endorsed Boccieri in his re-election bid.

The organization cites Boccieri’s 93 percent score in its 2009 National Environmental Scorecard, accepted as a yardstick for rating congressional members on conservation and clean energy issues.

The League of Conservation Voters considers itself a non-partisan group. Its Ohio director is Jim McGregor, a Republican who served in the Ohio House with Boccieri. McGregor said Boccieri’s military experience helps him understand America’s need to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

Gerrymandering
Ever wonder why the districts are so screwed up and some counties and divided between districts? Why are they so stretched out over wide areas of the state? It all comes down to the game of politics.

Gerrymandering is a form of boundary delimitation (redistricting) in which electoral district or constituency boundaries are deliberately modified for electoral purposes, thereby producing a contorted or unusual shape. The resulting district is known as a gerrymander; however, that noun can also refer to the process.

Gerrymandering may be used to achieve desired electoral results for a particular party, or may be used to help or hinder a particular group of constituents, such as a political, racial, linguistic, religious or class group.

When used to allege that a given party is gaining a disproportionate power, the term gerrymandering has negative connotations. However, a gerrymander may also be used for purposes that some perceive as positive, notably in US federal voting district boundaries which produce a proportion of constituencies with an African-American or other minority in the majority (these are thus called “minority-majority districts”).

                                                        The Republican Candidate Debates

(Canton) – All four candidates in the Republican Party primary for the 16th Congressional District have agreed to participate in the Debate scheduled for Tuesday, March 9 at GlenOak High School in Canton.  The debate is being presented as a joint effort of four different Tea       Party/9-12 Groups active in Ohio’s 16th Congressional.

The debate on March 9 will focus on jobs, the economy and domestic issues.  A second debate is scheduled for March 25 at Wooster High School, and will focus on national defense, terrorism, international issues and core values.  These locations have been chosen because the first debate is in the population center of the district, while the second debate is in the geographic center of the district.  Both debates are scheduled from 7:30pm to 9:00 pm with the doors opening at 7:00pm.

“We are hosting a Republican Candidate Debate during the primary season as it is the best way for citizens to compare the different candidates, and make their own decision as to who is the best challenger for the incumbent for the 16th Congressional District,” stated Stephanie Bragg, Acting Director of New American Patriots.  “We plan to host one or two debates this fall prior to the general election, with the incumbent Congressman debating against the winner of the Republican primary.”

The debates are free and open to the public.  The candidates will provide additional information about themselves at tables near the auditorium.  In addition the four Tea Party/9-12 groups involved in organizing the debates will also have tables to answer questions from the audience about the Tea Party movement, and how the average citizen can become more actively and effectively involved in civic participation.  The organizing groups are Medina County Friends And Neighbors (MCFAN), New American Patriots (Ashland Tea Party), Stark 9.12 Patriots and Wooster 912 Project.

Noted Jim Woods of MCFAN, “All we have heard from Washington this year is how we must spend our way to prosperity, borrow our way out of debt, and transfer power over our lives to the government in order to be solve the economic crisis.  I look forward to hearing some different ideas at this debate.”

Any additional questions regarding this event please forward to Stephanie Bragg at ashlandohteaparty@yahoo.com or to Jim Woods at jimwoods@mcfan.org.

High-Ranking Soviet Defector Endorses Ohio Congressional Candidate

CANTON, Ohio, Jan. 4 /Christian Newswire/ – The highest-ranking Soviet and Eastern Bloc Intelligence Official ever to defect to America (in 1978) – who went on to help Ronald Reagan win the Cold War – has endorsed Paul Schiffer, Republican candidate for Congress in Ohio’s 16th Congressional District. Pacepa escaped Romania to become an American citizen.

Lt. General Ion Mihai Pacepa’s statement follows:

“Thirty-one years ago I paid with two-death sentences–from Communist Romania–for my desire to break with Marxism and become a citizen of the greatest country on earth. All former Soviet satellites have now ‘defected’ from Marx’s socialism, which had transformed a third of the world into an abysmal 20th century feudalism. Great Britain, Italy, Germany, France and Greece have also abandoned their ruinous experiments with Marx’s socialism.

“Alas, now the virus of Marxism with its fatal governmental takeovers has started infecting our shores. If the Democratic Party has its way, it will transform the United States into a socialist country in all but name. The 2010 elections could prevent that catastrophe from happening.

“I am grateful that Paul Schiffer has decided to run for the U.S. Congress, and I appeal to the people of the 16th Congressional District in Ohio, to vote for him. I know Paul well. I am sure that, once in the U.S. Congress, he will do everything in his power to keep the United States the best and most powerful country on earth.
