JACKSON TWP. —
Paul R. Schiffer believes a volunteer has tried to sabotage his effort to win the Republican nomination for Ohio’s 16th congressional district.
“He’s basically paralyzed the campaign,” Schiffer said of the volunteer.
Schiffer is one of four Republicans on the May 4 primary ballot seeking nomination for the 16th District seat. The winner will challenge U.S. Rep. John Boccieri, D-Alliance, in November.
Because of problems with the volunteer, Schiffer has been tied up filing reports with the Federal Elections Commission, the FBI, Jackson Township police and Massillon city prosecutors.
Police and prosecutors said they believe the situation is a civil dispute and don’t expect any criminal charges will be filed.
Schiffer said he fired the volunteer March 11. Two days later, he filed a complaint with Jackson police, saying the man hadn’t given back property when he was dismissed. Schiffer told police the volunteer was fired because of his conduct with other campaign workers and disruptions at the campaign headquarters on Everhard Road NW.
The volunteer joined the campaign in December. Schiffer claims the volunteer designed a new “bogus” Web site and blocked access to earlier sites. The volunteer is accused of accessing the campaign’s e-mail and sending unauthorized messages.
“He’s tried to take over the whole campaign,” Schiffer said.
The volunteer, meanwhile, has left Ohio. He said that he used his own money to create the Web site promoting Schiffer’s campaign, which includes the e-mail service. He also said the changes he made were approved by the campaign.
The dispute, Schiffer said, forced him to cancel his first town hall meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday and changed to tonight.
The first town hall now is set for Wednesday in Wadsworth, while the second will be March 26 at Hoover High School in North Canton. Schiffer plans town hall meetings on each Wednesday in the weeks approaching the primary.
MILLER EVENT SET
A fundraiser supporting Matt Miller’s bid for Congress has been set for Monday night in Green.
The free event begins at 7 p.m. at the 356th Fighter Group restaurant at 4919 Mount Pleasant St. NW. Local recording artist Julie Hufstetler will perform a mix of patriotic and contemporary music. Raffle tickets will be sold to win door prizes. Campaign contributions will be accepted.
A $50 donation is necessary to attend a private reception at 6:30 p.m. with Miller. Anyone wishing to attend can contact Greg Butler at (330) 832-5205.
Miller, a former Ashland County commissioner, is making his third bid for the nomination. He lost to Ralph Regula in the 2006 Republican primary and narrowly lost to Kirk Schuring in the 2008 primary.
The losses haven’t dampened Miller’s enthusiasm. He made campaign stops Monday in Wooster and Canton, before ending the evening passing out literature after a North Canton City Council meeting.
MORE RENACCI SUPPORT
Jim Renacci, the former Wadsworth mayor in the Republican primary race for the 16th District, has picked up more endorsements.
Renacci — who has caught the national party’s attention — is one of only 10 candidates nationwide to receive the House Conservative Fund’s endorsement.
Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., the House Conservative Fund’s honorary chairman, said the organization exclusively supports principled Republicans who “won’t vote for tax increases, who are pro-growth and who are pro-family.”
The Medina County Republican Party’s executive committee officially endorsed Renacci. Wadsworth is in southern Medina County.
Party Chairman Bill Heck called Renacci the strongest among Republican candidates seeking the seat.
BOCCIERI ENDORSED
An environmentalist group — the League of Conservation Voters — has endorsed Boccieri in his re-election bid.
The organization cites Boccieri’s 93 percent score in its 2009 National Environmental Scorecard, accepted as a yardstick for rating congressional members on conservation and clean energy issues.
The League of Conservation Voters considers itself a non-partisan group. Its Ohio director is Jim McGregor, a Republican who served in the Ohio House with Boccieri. McGregor said Boccieri’s military experience helps him understand America’s need to reduce dependence on foreign oil.
