When Good Men Do Nothing

 ”All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

So much of the history of the struggle between good and evil can be explained by Edmund Burke’s observation. Time and again those who profess to be good seem to clearly outnumber those who are evil, yet those who are evil seem to prevail far too often. Seldom is it the numbers that determine the outcome, but whether those who claim to be good men are willing to stand up and fight for what they know to be right. There are numerous examples of this sad and awful scenario being played out over and over again in the scriptures.

They Get Nothing Good Done

When good men do nothing, they get nothing good done. To be good, one must do good. The Lord commands his people to do good (Luke 6:35; Eph. 2:10). Christ “gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:14).

Words matter – listen carefully to our current administration

Since the initially strong language on religious freedom used in President Obama’s Cairo speech, presidential references to religious freedom have become rare, often replaced, at most, with references to freedom of worship. A purposeful change in language could mean a much narrower view of the right to religious freedom.

“Religious freedom, in turn, which men demand as necessary to fulfill their duty to worship God, has to do with immunity from coercion in civil society. Therefore it leaves untouched traditional Catholic doctrine on the moral duty of men and societies toward the true religion and toward the one Church of Christ.”

Christianity is at a critical juncture pertaining to endtime prophecy.

 

What we believe about the timing of the rapture of the church
has everything to do with how we prepare.

The vast majority of Christians believe that it is unethical and divisive to preach any endtime prophecy as if one position (pre-trib, mid-trib,  post-trib, etc.) was better than the other.

We are pressured NOT to make any truly definitive statements about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In some places it is taboo for a preacher to state unequivocally that Jesus will come BEFORE the tribulation or AFTER it. In most cases, however, a pre-trib position dominates, even though no scriptural case is presented with it.

The assertion is that nobody knows for sure, nor CAN anybody know for sure. We are forced to take a noncommittal stance in the presence of brethren.

Behind this trap is the false assumption that IT DOESN’T MATTER what you believe about endtime prophecy. All that most folks seem to care is that we keep the peace, and let nobody rock the boat.

Ask yourself an honest question. Does it truly matter what we believe about the Rapture and the Tribulation?

If it DOESN’T MATTER, why on earth are we so fascinated with the book of Revelation? Are we merely looking for apocalyptic jargon to fill in crossword puzzles with?

If we are going to be raptured BEFORE any of these events, why do we need this information?

Why did God Almighty give prophets and preachers down through the centuries these vividly explicit visions and dreams and revelations, if they, in the final analysis are MOOT and IMPERTINENT to endtime saints?

Most preachers and Christians treat prophecy as if it is completely unknowable or that it simply doesn’t matter what you believe. That position is entirely inconsistent with all the many other issues we are faced with in scripture.

How can we justify our lackadaisical treatment of prophecy, when Jesus said, “…the scripture cannot be broken,” John 10:35. The scripture is concrete on everything it teaches.

Judas Iscariot dipped the sop with Jesus, and was lost, “that the scripture might be fulfilled.” John 13:18 and 17:12. The Roman soldiers cast lots for Jesus’ garment, “that the scriptures might be fulfilled,” John 19:24. His piercing, His wounds, nearly everything He suffered was a fulfillment of scripture.

If the scholars had not IGNORED the original prophecies, they might not have murdered the Lord. If only they had made the CONNECTION between ancient prophecy and contemporary fulfillment!

Again and again, the old scriptures revealed things to come that would have had a profound effect if ONLY SOMEONE HAD NOTICED THEM!

ALL SCRIPTURE is profoundly important to us.

2 Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

How can we get by, as long as we keep insisting that endtime prophecy MUST NOT BE CAREFULLY DEFINED?

Would you have me to believe that it makes NO DIFFERENCE whether I am PRE-TRIB or POST-TRIB?

Then WHY is it in the Bible?

2 Peter 1:20 says, “no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.” Why do we think we can get by interpreting prophecy erroneously? Why do we believe it doesn’t matter.

We must realize that ALL SCRIPTURE is profitable, but…

All MIS-INTERPRETED scripture is UNPROFITABLE!

Did it ever occur to you that ONE or the OTHER HAS TO BE RIGHT, and ONE or the OTHER HAS TO BE WRONG?

Do you realize that WRONG DOCTRINE CORRUPTS UNDERSTANDING?

Suppose your auto mechanic insisted that it makes NO DIFFERENCE whether you put the lug nuts on the inside or the outside of the wheel!

Suppose your airline pilot insisted that it makes NO DIFFERENCE whether the gyroscope is level or slanted!

Suppose your homebuilder insists it makes NO DIFFERENCE whether your building is plumb or “near’bout”!

Why can we not SEE that every single prophetic event has a ripple effect on our understanding?

If we place prophetic events in the WRONG ORDER, we deprive ourselves of UNDERSTANDING.

But, you say, it is NOT CRITICAL to understand these things!!

That is EXACTLY what many argue against water baptism, and EXACTLY what the ecumenical crowd says about the one true God.

Not critical?

How can you say for sure that IT IS NOT CRITICAL to know whether the church will be raptured BEFORE or AFTER the TRIBULATION?

One may argue that if we have to go through the tribulation, we will just have to trust God like we ALWAYS HAVE!

NO – MY FRIEND – if you go through the Great Tribulation, and are faced with the Mark of the Beast, and the threat of death simply because you were NOT PRUDENT enough to take precautions and stay out of view, then you will certainly realize in that hour that you were FOOLISH for not taking note of endtime prophecy.

You may not think that statement is persuasive. Let me pose it to you another way.

The wise man said, “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Proverbs 27:12.

If the Bible WARNS us of an evil tribulation, and we DO NOT HIDE OURSELVES, we “pass on, and are punished.”

Consider the real possibilities. Can it be that GOD is giving us FAIR WARNING of the most difficult time that any saints of any age ever faced, and He wants us to PREPARE for it? We have at least three and a half years to make preparation for the last three and a half years. In Joseph’s day, God gave them seven years to prepare for seven bad years. Even the pagan Egyptian Pharaoh had enough sense to listen to Joseph’s warning, and empowered him to act accordingly!

Is that a sound Biblical principle? Indeed it is!

God warned Abraham that He was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah; therefore Abraham interceded for Lot and his family. What if Abraham had IGNORED the prophecy?

God warned Joseph that there would be seven years of famine in Egypt. Joseph stored up, and SAVED both Egypt and his FAMILY. What if Joseph had IGNORED the prophetic warning?

In II Kings 6, the prophet Elisha warned the king of Israel of a Syrian attack, and “the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.” What if the king had IGNORED the prophetic warning?

When Jesus was born, the angel WARNED Joseph to flee with them to Egypt. What if Joseph had IGNORED the warning?

Jesus personally fled the scene of potential trouble numerous times.

One of the ancient principles from the book of Proverbs directed the “sluggard” to “go to the ant,” and learn the principle of preparing for hard times.

Yet many insist that preaching a warning of hard times is unscriptural and shows a lack of faith in God. Nothing could be further from the truth.

How many examples do I have to give to prove to you that the ENTIRE BIBLE is filled with prophets and preachers and watchmen on walls and on towers, blowing trumpets and sounding alarms to SAVE THE PEOPLE from impending dangers?

The Bible WARNS the Church that the Saints will go through the tribulation.

Please refer to my article “When is the Rapture?”,

You will plainly see that there will be NO RAPTURE before the Mark of the Beast. Revelation 20:4,5 clearly shows that the FIRST resurrection INCLUDES endtime saints who RESISTED or OVERCAME the Mark of the Beast. That is certainly not a pre-trib scenario. If it is the FIRST resurrection, then there was no rapture before the Mark of the Beast.

Does that not strike dread in your soul to consider that you might have to endure a fight against the Mark of the Beast? If it doesn’t, you must be oblivious to the realities of it.

Friend, Jesus Christ so dreaded going to Calvary that he sweat as it were great drops of blood. Where is your so-called courage?

I submit to you that it is NOT courage, but rather IGNORANCE of the facts, that causes you to treat the subject of SAINTS IN THE TRIBULATION with so much complacency.

The French philosopher, deTocqueville, in Democracy in America, said, “The prospect really does frighten me that men may finally become so engrossed in a cowardly love of immediate pleasure that their interest in their own future and in that of their descendants may vanish, and that they may prefer tamely to follow the course of their destiny rather than make a sudden energetic effort to set things right.”

Warnings are a call to action.

I believe the biggest reasons that these warnings are in the Bible is so that believers can take protective actions!

Israel needed water, so Elisha said, “Dig ditches – God will fill them.”

When the collapse of civilization comes, when Babylon falls, when the lights go out, and martial law is enacted, YOU ARE GOING TO NEED WATER, FOOD, and SURVIVAL SUPPLIES.

I am telling you that the Bible gives us AMPLE WARNING, so that we can “DIG DITCHES!”

Have you never asked yourself, “What will I do for food and water if I refuse to take the Mark of the Beast?” If God warns you ALL YOUR LIFE, and then you run out of water, who is to blame – you or God?

Endowed by Our Creator

“To the distinguished Character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian. The signal Instances of providential Goodness which we have experienced and which have now almost crowned our labors with complete Success, demand from us in a peculiar manner the warmest returns of Gratitude and Piety to the Supreme Author of all Good.” –George Washington

In 1775, on the eve of Revolution, the First Continental Congress called for “a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer.”

Apparently, our Founders saw a national day of prayer as a fitting observance, not unlike the establishment of Thanksgiving, of which George Washington wrote in 1777, “Being the day set apart by the Honorable Congress for public Thanksgiving and Praise; and duty calling us devoutly to express our grateful acknowledgements to God for the manifold blessings he has granted us, the General … earnestly exhorts, all officers and soldiers, whose absence is not indispensably necessary, to attend with reverence the solemnities of the day.”

Other Founders continued the tradition.

John Adams declared May 9, 1798, as “a day of solemn humiliation, fasting, and prayer … that our country may be protected from all the dangers which threaten it.”

James Madison followed this tradition, but wrote, “I was always careful to make the Proclamations absolutely indiscriminate, and merely recommendatory; or rather mere designations of a day, on which all who thought proper might unite in consecrating it to religious purposes, according to their own faith & forms. In this sense, I presume you reserve to the Govt. a right to appoint particular days for religious worship throughout the State, without any penal sanction enforcing the worship.”

Our Founders were greatly and rightly suspect of any encroachment by government upon religious freedom, and codified that proscription in Amendment I of our Bill of Rights: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

In other words, Congress may not mandate that a particular religion be nationalized, and others be prohibited.

Our Founders were not radical secularists. Far from it. One need only examine their many writings on the subject as evidence. But, rightly, they didn’t want the United States to be wedded with a particular church, as was the case with England and the Anglican Church.

Thomas Jefferson, a vigilant though skeptical Anglican, made clear this prohibition in his obscure but maliciously misconstrued 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptist Association. Far from calling for the coercive stripping of all religious influences from public life, Jefferson merely assured his Baptist constituents in Connecticut that their denominational practices were safe because our Constitution provided a “wall of separation” between church and state, which would prohibit the national government from recognizing Anglicanism as the national religion. (Notably, two days after writing that letter, Jefferson attended religious services in the House of Representatives.)

But as Madison wrote, our Constitution, the one he penned, does not bar the government from designating “particular days for religious worship throughout the State.”

However, in the latter half of the 20th century, judicial activists (the “despotic branch“) as Jefferson called them) have “interpreted” the First Amendment to suit their political agendas, placing evermore severe constraints upon the free exercise of religion while wholly misrepresenting the aforementioned “Wall of Separation” in a concerted effort to expel religious practice from any and all public forums.

They have done so by falsely putting forth a “living constitution,” a revisionist document which has little resemblance to the authentic Constitution that once was our Republic’s standard for Rule of Law.

As noted by former Chief Justice William Rehnquist, “The wall of separation between church and state is a metaphor based upon bad history, a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging. It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned. … The greatest injury of the ‘wall’ notion is its mischievous diversion of judges from the actual intention of the drafters of the Bill of Rights.”

The intended consequence of this artificial barrier between church and state is to remove the unmistakable influence of our Creator from all public forums, particularly government education institutions, and thus, over time, to disabuse belief in a sovereign God and the notion of natural rights. This erosion of knowledge about the origin of our rights, the very foundation of our country and basis of our Constitution, has dire implications for the future of our Essential Liberty.

In 1952, Congress established the National Day of Prayer as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Harry Truman. The NDP designation (36 U.S.C. § 119) calls for the nation “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.”

Naturally, the Despotic Branch is challenging that resolution, asserting that religion and politics don’t mix.

On April 15, 2010, U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb (a 1979 Jimmy Carter nominee) ruled that the statute establishing the National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional, as it is “an inherently religious exercise that serves no secular function.”

That ruling, of course, has no basis in our Constitution, but merely among those who have contorted its true meaning into a grotesque remnant of its original brilliance.

Perhaps Ms. Crabb, and all other jurists who are attempting to amend our Constitution by judicial diktat in full disregard for the constitutional prescription for amendment in Article 5, should pause and consider the faith of our Founders.

Perhaps they should look into the depth of faith that motivated the actions of Patriot Founders John Hancock, Roger Sherman, John Dickinson, Hugh Williamson, Benjamin Rush, Samuel Huntington, John Adams, William Williams, Robert Treat Paine, Rufus King, William Livingston, James Wilson, George Mason and Patrick Henry.

Here are but a few examples of how our Founders expressed their faith when in positions of authority.

Hancock called on his home state of Massachusetts to pray, “that universal happiness may be established in the world [and] that all may bow to the scepter of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the whole earth be filled with His glory.”

According to John Adams: “The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God. … The Christian religion is, above all the religions that ever prevailed or existed in ancient or modern times, the religion of wisdom, virtue, equity and humanity. … Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only law book and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited. … What a Eutopia — what a Paradise would this region be!”

Henry wrote, “The Bible … is a book worth more than all the other books that were ever printed. … The great pillars of all government and of social life [are] virtue, morality, and religion. This is the armor, my friend, and this alone, that renders us invincible.”

Samuel Adams called on Massachusetts to pray that, “we may with one heart and voice humbly implore His gracious and free pardon through Jesus Christ, supplicating His Divine aid … [and] above all to cause the religion of Jesus Christ, in its true spirit, to spread far and wide till the whole earth shall be filled with His glory.”

Even those who were cautious about the public expressions of religion left evidence of their views on Christianity.

Jefferson wrote, “I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be: sincerely attached to His doctrines in preference to all others. … I am a real Christian — that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ.”

Benjamin Franklin wrote, “As to Jesus of Nazareth … I think the system of morals and His religion as He left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is likely to see.”

Beyond these many writings — as if further proof were needed — our Founders unequivocally enumerated the natural rights of all men in our Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…” These are natural rights — gifts from God, not government.

Notably, the conviction that our rights are innately bestowed by “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” is enumerated in the constitution preamble of every state in our Union.

Thomas Jefferson proclaimed, “The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time. … Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever.”

Prayer is Almighty God’s prerequisite for true hope and change, and our nation needs an abundance of both right now.

Agape in action

There are many people who choose to serve the Lord Jesus Christ with their gifts and talent every day of their lives but when a disaster strikes sometimes they get some much deserved credit. I have recently received an e-mail from a reader of the Ohio Free Press site and a request to post something about the relief efforts taking place in Haiti.

A little more than a year ago I provided some repair items to a mission organization of a nature you might not think of and it is in Coshocton, Ohio. MMS Aviation (Missionary Maintenance Services), based in Coshocton, Ohio, about 70 miles east of Columbus, serves two primary functions in the field of missions aviation.  The first is to prepare people to serve as pilot/mechanics or aircraft maintenance specialists, with a hands-on apprenticeship program of study, lasting 30 months.  Most mission aviation organizations, such as MFI, require that each pilot also be a certified mechanic.  The training at MMS qualifies each apprentice to take the FAA exam.  Upon passing the exam, MMS graduates receive their Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic certificate.  They are then expected to serve with one of the 125 missions aviation organizations operating around the world.  The second function of MMS is to repair, rebuild, and overhaul missionary aircraft for the over eighty missions that they serve.  A unique aspect of the MMS ministry is that all mission aircraft maintenance, modifications, and repairs are performed on a labor-free basis.  Missions are charged only for parts and materials used.  This provides a tremendous benefit for the missions they serve.  In 2005, MMS saved mission aviation over $981,000 in labor expenses alone!

During my visit I met with MMS President Dwight Jarboe. The tour he gave took more time than I had expected but you could tell how passionate he was for the work MMS does to serve the those who go unto all the world taking the gospel and humanitarian aid.

MMS and others have began providing support in Haiti as soon as a plane could hit the ground. The cargo has been medical personal & supplies. Organizations like MFI and MMS provide support to over eighty-seven Christian organizations who use aircraft in support of their ministry. Sixty-two graduates from MMS have served or are serving in remote locations around the world.

Quick update. Time is short, but praise the LORD. He is showering PMH with blessings!!!

I talked to Charles this morning. Last conversation was Wednesday morning. The LORD has been on the move!

  • Mendilove, an orphan much loved by us all, was allowed to fly to the US accompanied by Diana Cherry (Jay’s wife, this is part of the Lespwa team). She was wearing a princess outfit. Can’t wait to see pictures. Mendilove is in the hands of US customs officials. Pray that she is released into the waiting hands of the Zuschlag family (of Mauldin, SC) who have been trying to adopt her.
  • Wednesday night, Charles was contacted by the UN. A team arrived to assess the campus. They asked if it was OK for two helicopters from Fox News to come visit the next morning. At 6:30am, Thursday, two helicopters descended on the campus of PMH. Out stepped the head of Fox News accompanied by US Military escort. Lights, camera, action. Keep an eye on the TV tonight. They also airlifted 12 of the most critical patients at PMH to get extra surgical care elsewhere. I expect Charles and Dr. Gathercoal will get to go find more patients in P-a-P today. Praise the Lord!
  • The local mayor of Cabaret (responsible for ordering the destruction of our bridge) came to Charles. He thanked Charles for all PMH is doing for the community. PMH is the only group doing anything for this area. He said he was sorry for ordering the bridge destroyed. Pray that we can continuing “building bridges” in Cabaret.
  • Mission of Hope gave Charles 50 boxes of food. Enough to feed 200 people for 1 week.
  • Our DR team is on the move. Phase 1 is in process today. Jeremy in the UN helicopter. Touches down by noon. Phase 2 is on schedule. Truck convoy should arrive tomorrow. The UN in the DR gave our team a 3rd truck full of supplies. Can you believe it! Praise God. One more important note—thanks to a contact of a contact of a contact of Jake Tamminga (one our close advisors in Canada), a Colonel in the DR Airforce is personally escorting our convoy with his men all the way to PMH campus. We did not know this man personally. When our team was talking to him yesterday, he said, “We can provide you with security, but you must know, the only security is in Jesus Christ.” The LORD led us to a dear brother in the DR Airforce! Can it get any better than this???? I still don’t even know his name, but I hope he gets this update somehow. Sir, we thank you.
