A House lawmaker is attempting to force a vote on a resolution that would require the congressional healthcare talks taking place behind closed doors be open to the public.
Congressman Vern Buchanan (R-Florida) is seeking 218 signatures in the House for a discharge petition that would force a floor vote on his “Sunshine Resolution,” which would require public access to negotiations on the healthcare bill in Congress. He says Americans should have a right to know what will end up in what he believes will eventually be a 3,000-page bill.
“The president campaigned and said eight different times that he wanted full transparency, no backroom secret deals, and [that] he wanted C-SPAN involved or he would have C-SPAN in there,” Buchanan recalls. “So we’re just asking the president to do what he campaigned on….[T]his is too big of an issue in terms of one-sixth of the economy in the country.”
