Medina, OH March 16, 2010.
Medina County Friends And Neighbors (MCFAN) has added its voice to that of State Senator Tim Grendell in calling for an investigation of Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner’s disqualification of three primary candidates. Brunner disqualified five candidates alleging that they had not collected enough signatures to qualify for the primary election. MCFAN believes that at least one of the five disqualified candidates; Steve Christopher who is running for Attorney General, and possibly as many as three of the candidates had enough valid signatures to qualify.
MCFAN members and affiliates across Northern Ohio made a concerted effort the week prior to the filing deadline to ensure that Attorney General candidate Steve Christopher, State Auditor candidate Seth Morgan, and State Supreme Court candidate Charles Miller had enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, ensuring Ohio voters a choice. Those efforts were successful.
Numerous discrepancies have surfaced; the Christopher campaign has a signed and time-stamped receipt from the Secretary of State’s office for petitions bearing 2,750 signatures but the Secretary of State only forwarded 788 signatures to county Board’s or Election for validation. The receipt was made public by the Christopher campaign after Secretary Brunner implied that disqualification resulted from a very low percentage of the signatures being valid. But approximately three fourths of the signatures actually forwarded to the county Boards of Election were deemed valid. Brunner’s office has yet to explain what happened to the 1,962 signatures that were not forwarded to the county offices. Secretary Brunner has issued contradictory statements justifying the disqualification and has attempted to shift the blame for discrepancies onto the candidates, or onto her staff. Noted MCFAN co-founder Jim Woods, “At the end of the day, ultimate responsibility for what happens in the Secretary of State’s office is Jennifer Brunner’s, and she cannot shirk that responsibility”.
Also noted Jim Woods, “This is a very serious issue. The very integrity of our political process is at risk, if a Secretary of State can arbitrarily decide who gets on the ballot and who does not. I know of two candidates for Attorney General who would have considered this a matter warranting investigation, and possibly criminal prosecution of Jennifer Brunner. She disqualified them both, and is unable or unwilling to justify that decision.”
