The United States has on per capita 90 civilian guns per 100 people in 2007 (Small Arms Survey 2007) with a total of 270,000,000 firearms. This total dwarfs the next 15 countries combined.
It is somewhat interesting to note where most of guns stores are located throughout the United States. It would stand to reason that the “mid” section of the United States, or Tractor Country, would have more guns stores than urban areas. Those numbers are an impressive 10 to 1 ratio considering that most of the population centers are along the coasts of the United States. These coastal population centers also are more liberal, and tend to have higher rates of crime and murder than the inland “Tractor Country” areas of the nation.
Amazingly, even gun ownership in areas of highly militarized areas (areas with military bases and communities) is less than in the “Tractor Country” on a per capita basis.
And the United States ranks 24th in the world as far as murder rates per capita with a .04828 murders per 1,000 people.
Amazingly, though the United States has a disproportionately higher rate of gun ownership that most of the rest of the world population combined, we have an incredibly lower rate of murder in proportion to other countries.
Even though the world views the United States as untamed and a “wild west” due to the sheer number of guns owned in the United States, the guns are not the issue. We must remember that the 2nd amendment was put there for a reason. The founders knew something that many Americans today have forgotten.
It is all too easy for a government to do as it pleases when it knows that the citizens can do nothing, or have no recourse when they feel their government is out of control. The founding Fathers had to take up arms against the King of England and wanted to ensure that their descendants would never have to fear their government again.
It seems as though we are losing sight of their foresight.
Even with the sheer number of firearms in the United States the question remains how free will we be 5, 10 or 20 years from now?
Guns are not the problem. Selfish, corrupt men’s souls are the problem. You take away an evil man’s gun, he will still find a way to kill. Just ask Abel.
