Is the GOP primary to replace Senator Voinovich about to being in earnest? It seems that at least an opening salvo is:
Republican Tom Ganley, a Cleveland area car dealer, launched a statewide television ad campaign in his bid to upset GOP favorite Rob Portman for the Ohio Republican Party nomination for U.S. Senate next spring.
The 60-second ad talks about Ganley’s ability to create jobs and his character, according to his campaign. Ganley owns 32 auto dealerships as well as finance and insurance companies that together employ more than 1,000 workers.
This has been the question all along: will Ganley spend his own money on a TV ad war? Because he isn’t really campaigning around the state – unlike Portman who is on his way to visiting all 88 counties – other than speaking at a few tea party events.
Portman has the funds to fight back if this is the battle Ganley picks, but it strikes me as a tragic waste of funds when the GOP needs all the help it can get come the general election.
Other questions worth asking: exactly how much money does Ganley really have to spend and how much is he willing to part with?
